How to Set Up Audio Delay in OBS with VB Cable

When streaming video content, it's essential to ensure that your audio and video are synchronized correctly to create a professional-looking output. One common issue faced by many streamers is the delay between their audio and video signals, which can be caused by various factors such as video processing time. In this article, we will explore how to set up an audio delay in OBS using VB Cable.

Choosing the Right Delay Value

The first step in setting up an audio delay is to determine the right value for your system. While 120ms is a good starting point, you may need to adjust it depending on your specific setup. I've seen values of up to 200ms being necessary in some cases.

Configuring VB Cable and OBS

To set up VB Cable and OBS, follow these steps:

1. Choose VB Cable output as the external app's audio input source.

2. Select VB Cable as the OBS Monitoring Device.

3. Delay the audio on your microphone (Advanced Audio Properties).

4. Connect your microphone directly to OBS as an input source.

Understanding Audio Router and VB Cable

Audio Router is an optional utility that allows you to route sources to destinations, while VB Cable is a virtual routable audio source/destination. These utilities are free and can be used to simplify the setup process.

The Workaround Solution

Unfortunately, there is currently no built-in way to choose OBS Audio in our external application. However, we can use VB Cable as a workaround until this functionality is built into OBS.

Adding an Audio Delay

To make your audio appear in sync with your video, you'll need to add an audio delay. This is because video processing takes some time, and your audio signal may arrive too early if not delayed. To achieve this, follow these steps:

1. Install VB Cable.

2. Restart your system.

3. Configure VB Cable as described above.

This workaround solution is available for Windows only, but it's a great option until OBS includes this functionality natively. With the built-in Virtual Camera option in OBS version 26 and later, setting up an audio delay has become even easier.
